Vinegar fly (Drosophila) on Dec 19, 2024

Originally reported as Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii)

Description of specimen

These look like fruit flies, similar to the spotted wing drysophila, but I’m not seeing any spots. They’re all over the fruit bowl, loitering on garbage pail lid, in my refrigerator, around compost bucket. It instantly brought back memories of the spotted wing drysophila invasion of 2008 (I think). First time I’d seen fruit flies in December.

Commentary

Thank you for your report! The photos are dark and don't show details, but these do look like Drosophila. We have a few species in Oregon in addition to Spotted-wing Drosophila and the "common" fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. I can't tell which one you have.
