Description of specimen

Near my mailbox across Highway 240 from my residence there is a large patch of giant hogweed starting to grow. I have noticed along the creek bed and in the drainage ditches. It’s toxic to animals and I’d like advice on removal for the safety of my livestock and children.

Commentary

Thank you, Kristin, for getting some pictures of the plants in question! It does appear to be poison hemlock (Conium maculatum).

I am linking some helpful resources when dealing with and identifying this species. As I mentioned, digging can be an effective method of removal but be sure to use gloves and long sleeves at a minimum. Burning and/or mowing of this species are not recommended as smoke and aerosolized sap can be toxic. Disposal of the plants in trash bags is recommended as well.
