Land Plants - invasive

American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) on Oct 22, 2010

Description of specimen

It is a pokeweed approximately 10 feet tall. It is laden with berries at this time. I was unaware of its invasive and poisonous nature and have allowed it to grow for several years. There are several more smaller plants that I have noticed growing in the neighborhood. I would like to know how to get rid of it. Please do not come onto my property when I am not home.

Commentary

Can pokeweed make my dogs ill?

Hi, Michelle. Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. For the moment, we're asking homeowners to clip and bag as many berries and flowers as possible and put them in the trash (not the yard debris). The stems should be fine in yard debris, though roots are probably not fine. They should also go in the trash. There is no requirement to remove the plant from your property (though, we recommend it), so I can't do anything on your property without your express written consent.

At the same time, we would like to map where people are finding it. If you are willing, I would like to include your property, and any others you know of, on our map. If you're okay with that, please email me directly (not through this website) at mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov. If you have other questions, feel free to reach me there, as well.

Thanks for your report!
