Description of specimen

We were taking out dead Fir and Birch. There are some other dead/dying trees, I think Ash. Found an emerald beetle and later found out what it was after some quick research.

Commentary

Thank you for your report! A native member of the Metallic Wood-boring beetle family, the Golden Buprestid, Buprestis aurulenta, is common in dead and dying Douglas-fir. These beetles are larger and less slender than EAB. They are not tree killers but are taking advantage of stressed trees.

Birch trees may be attacked by another invasive wood borer, the Bronze Birch Borer, Agrilus anxius, which is very similar to EAB.

There are a number of iridescent green look-alike beetles in Oregon that are not pests. I am attaching a link to the ODF EAB webpage with some photos of other Oregon insects that could be mistaken for EAB

Thanks for being on the lookout!
