Western Cedar Borer (Trachykele blondeli) on Jul 7, 2025

Description of specimen

Last Saturday the insect in the attached photo was recognized on the patio table at my residence in Swisshome. Using an app on a phone, it was identified as an emerald ash borer.
There are many young ash trees on the property and a couple of old ones. The property borders Lake Creek north of the Stagecoach Rd. bridge.
Several hours earlier in the day a friend of mine had trimmed some branches off one of the oldest ash trees. He ran the branches through a chipper for me. The tree was about 200 feet from the place where in borer was found.

Commentary

This is not EAB. This is Western cedar borer, Trachykele blondeli. They are not tree killers. They breed in recently dead and dying conifers.

Thanks for being on the alert.
