Description of specimen

Spiny, green branches, alternate leaves, spiny and scaly on older plants, flatted pods.

Commentary

What type of action can be taken to remove this species? What is the timeline for such removal? I'd be happy to organize a work party if necessary, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Paul, thank you for your report. This type of reporting is highly valuable to the organizations like mine that address invasive species. We do know about this site, and there is active control of gorse in Lincoln County. However, I will contact you shortly about organizing a local control effort with volunteers. I believe, the owners will be more receptive to controlling this population if local residents are voicing concern and offering help.

Location

Alongside the cliff at the Inn at Otter Crest stairs beach access. It is also found from that point south to the Devils Punch Bowl. Gorse, is a hard one to miss visually, so you'll see it right away. It is a dense thicket, impenetrable via foot. I've talked with the old manager at the Inn and Otter Crest years ago about this invasive and they stated that, "It was protecting the cliff, and their parking lot, from erosion." It has now spread south along the disturbed areas toward the Punch Bowl. I have yet to kayak north of the inn to see if it is spreading that direction as well.

There is also scotch broom present south of the Inn's stairs where the gorse is less dense.
