Description of specimen

Thousands of plants covering an area of approximately 100 acres of hillside above the town of Harbor, Oregon. The wind blows & carries seeds far & wide.

Commentary

Hi Julie, thank you for the report and your efforts to control this plant. I changed the species to jubata grass (Cortaderia jubata) which is a close cousin to pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana). The main difference is that jubata seeds are clones of the mother and are viable as soon as the plume emerges. Pampas grass seeds require male and female plants in close proximity in order to produce viable seeds. Thus, jubata spreads quickly.

That said, I am familiar with with this property as Curry SWCD did some control work there several years ago. However, I see that it has gotten out of hand again. There are major infestations of jubata to your south into CA that are not controlled which is a major seed source that arrives via winter storms (as you noted).
