Steindachner's shield-back (Neduba steindachneri) on Oct 2, 2025

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

I found this insect on my duffle bag which had been out overnight on a large tree stump at our campsite. The insect moved its antennae a lot as I was trying to take photos but it did not move or try to escape as I moved it off the bag and on to the stump.

When I failed to find it on any insect identifier I thought it would be worth notifying the invasive species experts.

Commentary

Thank you for your report! That is a native insect, although not commonly seen. That is Neduba steindachneri, or "Steindachner's shield-back katydid". Thanks for the photos.
