Land Plants - invasive

American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) on Sep 8, 2011

Submitter has sample
EDRR Status: Population treated

Description of specimen

They're huge. Pokeberry plants. I looked up online to see what they were, these have been here since last year at least. Physical specimens are in the yard growing like the weeds they are.

Commentary

Since I'm only a renter in a house, will the owner have to be notified?

Thanks for your email. Our primary goal at this point is to keep seeds and berries in check. Those, along with any roots you dig, should go in the trash (NOT yard debris or compost). Stems won't reroot, so those CAN go in the yard debris. Digging is probably the best management approach at the moment, but look forward to several years of dealing with regrowth. We are currently doing trials on herbicide treatment and hope to have result on our website by mid-summer next year. If you're willing to send your address (mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov), I'll a) make a note on our map, and b) put the address on our mailing list to let folks know about treatment.

Also, feel free to email me directly with other questions. Best of luck...
