Land Plants - invasive

American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) on Sep 12, 2011

Submitter has sample
EDRR Status: Local expert notified

Description of specimen

Lots of small seedlings in our garden areas and along our fenceline. Large tree-like plants behind garages of neighbors.

Commentary

We have been trying to cut the leafy portions of the tree-like plants on/near our property before they bear fruit. The rootball it difficult to extract 100%, so it keeps coming back. Is there anyone that can help us completely remove it?

Hi, Stephanie. Thanks for your pokeweed report. I'm sorry to say there's no assistance we can give for digging out the roots (which ARE awful). In the absence of more staff or a proven chemical treatment, the best strategy we have right now is pure physical persistance. Not the answer I like to give, but kind of where we are on with this species right now. Feel free to reach me directly at mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov.
