Insects and Spiders - invasive

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys) on Oct 19, 2011

Submitter has sample

Description of specimen

Hundreds, more likely thousands of bugs in the area. Spring was not as bad as last year but Fall seems to be worse on these last warm days.

Commentary

Guessing that the extent of BMSB in Clackamas county is known. In the garden they seemed to be mostly on beans and peppers.

Hi Gene, thanks so much for your report. Yes, Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs are now quite prevalent in the Portland metropolitan area, and they are indeed causing problems for people in gardens as well as their homes. Unfortunately, this is a species that is likely here to stay in the State of Oregon. You didn't submit a photo, but seem confident in your description that the suspected invasive is indeed the invasive stink bug - and many people notice these on particularly warm days in the fall. If a biological control or any other method of eradication surfaces, we'll post that information on the Oregon Invasive Species Council website.
