Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) on Apr 26, 2012

Submitter does not have a specimen
EDRR Status: Population assessed

Description of specimen

Basal rosette of leaves with flower spike rising 6-12 in. bearing distinctive clusters of white, cross-shaped flowers. Brittle, taproot goes straight down. Foliage slightly glabrous, smells distinctly of garlic when crushed. Definitely not our native look-alike!

Commentary

I live in the area and would be happy to help control the population if hand-pulling/bagging etc would be helpful.

Hi, Kathy. Thanks for your email and your offer! My understanding is that the Oaks Bottom/Sellwood area is being treated for garlic mustard, and that's probably going on over the next 2-4 weeks (weather-depending). If you still see healthy-looking plants after Memorial Day, give me a shout directly and we'll see what the next best step is.
