Description of specimen

Our rose leaves are being eaten by some bug and the leaves are skeletonized. I did some research on the internet and they look like what a Japanese Beetle would do. I see that they have been found in Cedar Mill. I have never seen any bug on the roses. Is there another pest that does this kind of damage?

Is there something to get rid of the problem? Are you going to co tact us? I would love a reply. Thanks.

Commentary

May be Japanese beetle, but you likely would have seen adults feeding at some point. Try flipping the leaves over, many roses have been attacked this year by small, greenish moth caterpillars which can be managed by Bt sprays from your local garden center.

Thanks for the submission. I second what Dr. Buhl indicates above. Call Oregon Department of Agriculture Insect Pest Prevention Program directly to inquire about Japanese beetle (503-986-4636). Oregon State University extension Master Gardner Program in Portland is also a good source for diagnosing symptoms on roses and other landscape plants (503) 445-4608
