Description of specimen

Gigantic moth, initially thought it was a bird or bat when it flew into the house. Greyish wings, about 4-5 inches across, body size 3 inches long and very fat, underside of wings was red with black “eyes” or circles on them. Trapped in a bug enclosure overnight so I could identify it, and it laid 41 eggs overnight— tiny white round eggs. We released it the next day but hosed down the eggs.

Commentary

This is a native sphinx moth, probably Smerinthus opthalmica. The hind wing is not clearly visible in your picture. The caterpillars, called hornworms and also very colorful, feed on willows and cottonwoods. They are native species and not considered pests. Thanks for using the Hotline!
