Insects and Spiders - native

Insect or Spider (unknown species) (various) on Jul 15, 2019

Originally reported as Asian Longhorned Beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis)

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

A large black beetle with white markings. The beetle had very long antennae, we only saw one and someone in my camping group killed it before I could get a picture or collect it. From memory, it looked like the Asian long-horned beetle or the citrus longhorn beetle. The Oregon Fir Sawyer is too black, this beetle we saw had white markings. We saw this beetle on Saturday, July 13th, in the late afternoon, it flew into someone and landed on their shirt.

Commentary

Hi there, thanks for using the Hotline. Without photos or a specimen, there isn't enough resources to make an identification. From your description, it does sound like a long-horned beetle. The native Oregon fir sawyer is super abundant this time of year. The male and females differ in the amount of white on their bodies. See this web page for common ALB look-alikes: http://pestdetector.forestry.oregonstate.edu/pests

Thanks again, Wyatt
