Commentary

Elm leaf beetle populations seem to go through periodic epidemics and can cause high damage to individual elm trees, including English elm, Siberian, Chinese elm and American elm. The first generation has probably laid eggs and larvae are eating the leaves now. They will complete development and there will be a 2nd generation before the cold temps come in the Fall. Healthy elms can tolerate feeding. So one thing you can do is make sure your trees get one or two deep, slow watering in the hot summer months. Certain insecticides can provide control. Some of these need to be applied by a professional applicator. Here is more info on the beetle as well as resource to find a licensed arborist.
