Description of specimen

I found what I believe to be evidence of Emerald Ash Borer at approximately 1pm July 16th 2024. Many surrounding ash trees showed dieback from the branch tips. I found frass and D shaped entry holes, as well as twisting galleries in the phloem. I was unable to obtain a specimen unfortunately.

Commentary

I visited this site on 7/23 and DO NOT see evidence of EAB. The signs and symptoms DO match Verticillium wilt disease (including leaf scorch and curl) and there were signs of woodboring beetles, all of which can easily be confused with EAB. However, the exit holes were too slightly large, went too deep, and none were D-shaped, and the galleries did not have the characteristic S-shaped pattern at any point and were too wide. It can be hard to differentiate EAB from other woodborer activity and sometimes there's a bit of variation but...if you notice at the galleries at this site travel in long vertical lines whereas EAB creates horizontal S-curves (https://www.insectimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=5382317) and EAB has holes that are often more D-shaped. (https://www.insectimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=1523072) than round.
